How to make the miso pork burgers

1 Place the pork mince, onion, miso and chilli in a large bowl; season. Mix until well combined. Shape mixture into 4 patties, slightly larger than the rolls.

2 Heat half the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over high heat. Split the rolls, and cook, cut side down, until browned lightly; remove from the pan. Add the remaining oil to the pan, cook the patties for about 8 minutes, turning halfway, or until browned and cooked through.

3 Meanwhile, combine the cabbage, coriander, extra onion and mayonnaise in a large bowl. Season to taste.

4 Spread each roll with extra mayonnaise. Place a patty on each roll and top with slaw.

5 Serve with remaining slaw, sweet chilli sauce, lime and extra chilli, if desired.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Miso Pork Burgers with Homemade Slaw

What makes these pork burgers different from regular burgers?

These burgers use white miso paste and fresh chilli to give a savoury, umami-rich flavour, making them a unique twist on traditional pork burgers.

Can I use a different type of mince instead of pork?

Yes, you can substitute chicken, turkey, or beef mince. However, pork works best with miso for a rich and slightly sweet flavour.

What type of bread rolls should I use?

You can use brioche, sesame seed, wholemeal, or even ciabatta rolls. Soft rolls complement the juicy burger best.

Can I make the patties ahead of time?

Yes, the uncooked patties can be made in advance and kept in the fridge for up to 24 hours before cooking. You can also freeze them for later use.

Can I cook these burgers on a braai instead of a frying pan?

Yes, these patties can be grilled on a braai over medium-high heat for about 8 minutes, flipping halfway.

What can I use instead of miso paste?

If you don’t have miso paste, you can try soy sauce, hoisin sauce, or a bit of Worcestershire sauce for a similar savoury depth.

Is the slaw essential, or can I use a different topping?

The slaw adds freshness and crunch, but you can swap it for lettuce, sliced cucumbers, or pickled vegetables if preferred.

How spicy is this recipe?

The spice level depends on the amount of fresh red chilli used. For a milder version, reduce or omit the chilli. For extra heat, add more chopped chilli or a spicy sauce.

Can I make the slaw in advance?

Yes, the slaw can be made a few hours ahead and stored in the fridge. However, it’s best eaten fresh to maintain its crisp texture.

What can I serve with these burgers?

These burgers go well with sweet potato fries, potato wedges, grilled corn, or a fresh green salad.

How do I store leftover cooked patties?

Store cooked patties in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a pan or microwave before serving.
