A parent’s touch can be one of the most powerful forms of connection in the early months of life. Gentle, intentional contact helps babies feel safe, relaxed and understood. Infant massage is a nurturing practice that supports both emotional bonding and physical development, even in children with down syndrome. As we observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March, we look at the link between this genetic condition and infant massage therapy.

Touch is one of the first ways babies explore and understand their world. For little ones with additional needs, like those with Down syndrome, sensory experiences can sometimes feel more intense or require careful adaptation. Some babies crave deeper input, while others might startle at light touches or become overwhelmed. This doesn’t mean touch should be avoided, far from it. It simply underscores the need for thoughtful, predictable, and baby-led touch that respects their cues.
That’s where infant massage shines, especially when delivered by parents. As the child’s most familiar and safest source of comfort, parents are perfectly positioned to provide nurturing touch. Research shows that when parents learn supportive massage techniques, both baby and parent often benefit from calmer behaviours, better sensory regulation in the child, and reduced stress for the caregiver. There is a growing need in South Africa to empower parents to be more in tune with their baby’s needs and this is what has taken me on this journey to educate, to create an awareness and to know the power of positive touch!
Understanding Down Syndrome and Early Development
Children with Down syndrome typically follow the same developmental patterns as the next child. However, their health and developmental challenges vary from child to child and often reach milestones like rolling, sitting unsupported, crawling, or walking a bit later. Common features include:
Hypotonia: Low Muscle Tone, which can make coordinating movements trickier and requires extra support for positioning and carrying
Developmental Delays in gross motor skills, like crawling and fine motor skills, like grasping objects.
Congenital Heart Defects: formed before birth; this is found in 50% of children born with Down syndrome, hearing or vision impairments, reduced immunity leading to more frequent infections, and obstructive sleep apnea due to factors like a smaller airway or larger tongue.
DOWN SYNDROME IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF NATURALLY OCCURRING INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY.
Positioning and carrying tips are key:
Support hypotonia of the muscles and ligaments with midline arm orientation during back-lying play using a soft mat or cushion, add rolled towels under the chest for safe tummy time, always supervised, and carry with hands around the rib cage rather than armpits to avoid shoulder strain. Avoid hip-carrying positions that could misalign hips or legs. This helps reduce injury & helps promote balance.
Early intervention, including specialised therapies, helps many children thrive and achieve their milestones with time and support.

So, How Does Infant Massage Benefit Babies With Down Syndrome?
MASSAGE can assist with improving muscle tone in children with Down Syndrome & many also enjoy the physical contact massage brings; some will often happily receive a full body massage in ONE SITTING!
Improves the Immune System Function; as the overall immunity of an individual’s system is lower, Infant Massage increases the production of white blood cells, helps combat infection, like soldiers on the battlefield.
Stimulates Blood & Lymphatic Circulation to promote the development of & functioning of the Blood & Lymphatic Circulation in infants with Down Syndrome, it aids in the removal of waste products from the body, it generates the distribution of oxygen & nutrients to all body organs & muscles.
Increases Weight Gain in Low Birth Weight Infants; A baby with Down Syndrome may be born prematurely or may be at a higher risk of lower birth weight, as a result of other factors, such as the health of the placenta or the health of the mother. Through the stimulation of the vagus nerve via massage, this promotes the development of the functioning of the digestive system, facilitating the digestion of breast milk or formula, thereby promoting weight gain in the low birth weight infant.
- Enhances Cognitive and Motor Development – Infants with Down syndrome often are slower to reach their developmental milestones. Infant massage stimulates and encourages growth, development & assists in reaching these milestones.
- Enhances attachment & Bonding – Parents better understand their baby’s needs and can communicate better, also helps with bonding – dads included.
- Speeds Myelination – Myelination is the process that occurs in the nervous system by which a fatty sheath called myelin covers a portion of some of the nerves. This is increased during skin stimulation. The process of myelination in the nervous system improves the functioning of all body systems & improves Brain-Body Communication, e.g., messages from the brain to the musculoskeletal system.
- THE MASSAGE ENVIRONMENT for an infant with Down Syndrome needs to provide plenty of stimulation. These include:
- Playing stimulating, vibrant music.
- Increasing visual stimulation, aid of windows or mirrors or toys and encouraging parents to use increased vocal /sound while they talk, sing, and make sounds to keep baby alert and interactive.
- Massage strokes – Swedish massage strokes – stimulate.
- Lymphatic exercises
