Footprints 4 Sam has proudly unveiled the new upgraded Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Ward at Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital.

April is Sam’s birthday month and it is always a meaningful time of reflection, remembrance and purpose for the Trust. To celebrate his life by creating a nurturing space for vulnerable babies and their mothers is a powerful tribute to the legacy he continues to inspire.

Melissa Williams Platt, Sam’s mum and Co-founder of Footprints 4 Sam, reflects,

“During Sam’s medical journey, we came to understand just how much warmth, dignity and human kindness matter when your world is filled with fear and uncertainty. We never had a space like this, but we know how deeply it would have meant something to us in those moments. When your child is fighting, even the smallest comfort can give you strength to face another day. That is why we create these spaces in Sam’s memory, so that other mothers can feel supported, cared for and less alone during some of the hardest days of their lives.”

Originally upgraded by the Trust five years ago, the ward has continued to serve countless families caring for premature and vulnerable newborns.

The latest improvements include the installation of secure lockers for mothers, allowing them to safely store personal belongings and enjoy greater privacy during lengthy stays in the ward. The kitchen has also been upgraded to create a neat, practical and easy-to-use space for mothers who often spend weeks, and sometimes months, caring for their babies.

Staff areas have also been redesigned, with improved filing and desk spaces to support greater efficiency in patient administration and day-to-day operations.

In addition, the bathrooms have received a gentle facelift, including repairs to the toilets, ensuring the ward remains clean, functional and welcoming for everyone who uses it.

“These upgrades are deeply aligned with our values of dignity, community and creating spaces that heal,” explains Melissa.  “We recognise the importance of maintaining environments that support both physical and emotional wellbeing, and are proud that we are able to make a difference to the space.”

Kangaroo Mother Care is a powerful and natural form of care for premature babies, where a tiny newborn is nestled skin-to-skin against their mother’s chest rather than remaining in an incubator. This life-changing approach helps improve patient outcomes and gives preemies the best possible chance to thrive.

Wrapped warmly against their mother, babies benefit from naturally regulated body temperature and the close contact can also help reduce the risk of infection. Just as importantly, KMC strengthens the bond between mother and child during a critical stage of development.

Footprints 4 Sam also currently funds monthly 24/7 WiFi access in the KMC Ward, helping mothers stay connected to loved ones while they remain largely isolated in the ward due to the vulnerability of their babies. Access to WiFi provides a vital link to the outside world, allowing them to communicate with family and friends, continue studying, or simply enjoy moments of entertainment during long days and nights at their babies’ bedside.

Beyond physical spaces, Footprints 4 Sam says the real heart of its mission lies in the hope, dignity, kindness, compassion and humanity it has been able to infuse into hundreds of lives. This is the true legacy of Sam and a journey that impacts paediatrics through humanity on both sides of the stethoscope.

Through its key initiatives, Footprints 4 Sam supports hundreds of underprivileged children living with chronic or life-limiting illnesses, their families, and the healthcare professionals who care for them in a deep, meaningful and powerful way.
