You will need:
- 15ml butter or margarine
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- 1 tin (400g) chopped tomatoes
- 3ml oregano
- 2ml salt
- pinch of pepper
- 250g white bread dough or 2 ready-made pizza bases
- 250ml grated mozzarella cheese
- 250ml pineapple pieces
- 125ml chopped ham or
other cold meats
How to make the homemade pizza:
To make the tomato sauce
1 Switch on the stove to medium heat. Place the saucepan on the stove and melt the butter or margarine in it.
2 Sauté the onion and garlic in the melted butter until soft.
3 Open the tin of tomatoes and empty the contents into the saucepan. Bring the mixture to the boil and then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 15–20 minutes, partially covered with the lid.
4 Stir in the oregano and continue to cook for another 3–5 minutes. Season with the salt and pepper. Switch off the stove.
Top tip: You can store any leftover tomato sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
To make the pizza bases
1 Knead the dough on the work surface until it is smooth and elastic and no longer sticks to your hands. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions.
2 Sprinkle a clean work surface with a little cake flour and then roll one portion of dough into a ball. Press the dough flat and then roll out with the rolling pin until it resembles a pizza base. Sprinkle the work surface and rolling pin with flour to prevent sticking.
3 Sprinkle flour on the baking sheet and place the pizza base on top.
4 Make the second pizza base in the same way as in steps 2 to 3.
5 Open the oven door carefully and step back to allow the steam to escape.
6 Use the oven gloves to remove the baking sheet and place it on a wooden chopping board. Put the second pizza in the oven.
7 Use the palette knife to loosen the first pizza from the baking sheet and then slide the pizza onto a large wooden board. Cut into slices with the pizza wheel or cutter or sharp knife.
8 Remove the second pizza from the oven as soon as it is ready and repeat steps 6 and 7. Turn the oven off.
To make the pizza
1 Set the oven temperature to 220 °C.
2 Spoon some tomato sauce onto the pizza bases and spread thinly, leaving the outside rim clear of any sauce.
3 Sprinkle an equal amount of cheese over each pizza base. Divide the pineapple and ham into equal portions and arrange on top of the pizza bases.
4 As soon as the oven reaches the required temperature, place the first pizza in the oven and bake for 10–15 minutes or until the cheese begins to bubble.
