Because raising tiny humans is hard work but with the right team (that’s us!), it gets a whole lot easier.
As the seasons shift and we move into the festive months, many parents notice their babies’ tummies seem a little more unsettled. Between temperature changes, new foods at family gatherings, and the excitement of holiday routines, it’s common to see an increase in bloating, gas, and reflux symptoms in little ones.
If you’ve recently introduced solids or noticed your baby seems more uncomfortable after feeds, you’re not alone. Let’s unpack what’s really happening in those tiny tummies, and how to restore calm for the holidays.
Why Tummy Troubles Often Flare During Seasonal Change
Seasonal transitions can subtly affect digestion. Warmer weather often means a higher risk of food contamination in meals, and hydration is also hard to maintain. Babies may also pick up mild viruses that temporarily affect gut balance. Add in festive indulgences, rich foods, dairy treats, or new tastes, and it’s easy to see why little tummies can protest.
During this time, it’s also common for parents to start solids as you are on leave and plan around this milestone. You may also find yourself introducing more variety, which can be exciting but also overwhelming for a baby’s developing digestive system. A ‘naughty’ uncle slipping baby a treat!
Reflux, Lactose Intolerance, or Overfeeding? Understanding the Differences
Reflux (Spit-ups, arching, discomfort after feeds)
Reflux happens when milk or food flows back from the stomach into the oesophagus. In babies, the valve that keeps food down is still immature, so a little reflux is very common, especially under 6 months.
- What it looks like: frequent spit-ups, back-arching, crying during or after feeds, hiccups, sour smell on breath.
- Why it happens: liquid feeds, lying down soon after eating, or even congestion from a cold can worsen reflux.
- What helps: smaller, more frequent feeds; upright feeding positions; longer winding; keeping baby upright for 20–30 minutes after feeding.
Lactose Intolerance (Gas, bloating, watery stools)
True lactose intolerance in babies is rare, but temporary lactose sensitivity can occur after tummy bugs or if the gut lining is irritated. Lactose, the natural sugar in milk, may not be fully digested, causing gas and bloating.
- What it looks like: frothy, greenish, or explosive stools; excessive wind; a distended tummy; fussiness, especially after dairy feeds.
- What helps: time and gentle gut support. Most babies recover within a week or two. If formula-fed, a temporary lactose-free formula may be used under dietitian guidance. Breastfeeding can continue; sometimes spacing feeds helps balance foremilk and hindmilk. The foremilk is the more sugary milk.
Overfeeding (Fullness mistaken for hunger)
When your baby is unsettled, it’s natural to offer more milk or solids, but overfilling the tummy can make reflux and gas worse. Babies’ stomachs are tiny, and extra feeds can stretch them beyond comfort.
- What it looks like: frequent spit-ups after every feed, gulping, sudden crying or squirming soon after eating, large burps or hiccups.
- What helps: follow baby’s cues, slow down, pause mid-feed to burp, and let them rest between courses if on solids. Remember: babies don’t need “holiday portions!”

How to Soothe and Support the Gut During the Festive Season
- Keep meals simple and familiar. Introduce one new food at a time, even during holiday excitement.
- Hydrate gently. Offer small sips of water if baby is over 6 months, especially with thicker foods.
- Protect the gut barrier. Foods like oats, pear, pumpkin, and banana are soothing and fibre-rich.
- Support the microbiome. If baby has been on antibiotics or had a tummy bug, a good-quality baby probiotic can help restore balance.
- Pause dairy if needed. If you suspect dairy triggers discomfort, a short-term dairy-free period (8–12 weeks) under professional guidance can clarify sensitivity.
- Trust the basics. Rest, warmth, regular burping, and tummy time all play quiet roles in calming digestion.
When to Seek Help
If symptoms persist beyond mild bloating or occasional spit-ups, for example, if there’s poor weight gain, vomiting blood, or very watery stools, it’s time to consult your paediatrician or dietitian. Sometimes what looks like simple reflux or gas can point to a deeper intolerance or inflammation that needs assessment.
A Final Word for Parents
You’re doing beautifully. Feeding challenges can feel overwhelming, especially when everyone else seems to be celebrating and your baby is unsettled. Remember: tummy issues are common, and most resolve with a little time, observation, and support. Calm tummies make for calmer holidays, for both baby and you.
