World Environment Day 2025: A Call for Climate Action and Collective Change

World Environment Day 2025: A Call for Climate Action and Collective Change

by BabyYumYum June 5, 2025
written by BabyYumYum

Our planet is under pressure, and the time to act is now. World Environment Day 2025: A Call for Climate Action and Collective Change reminds us that protecting the Earth isn’t just a global responsibility—it’s a personal one too. From planting trees and reducing waste to demanding policy changes and supporting green innovation, every choice matters. World Environment Day 2025: A Call for Climate Action and Collective Change is a powerful reminder that small actions, when multiplied, lead to massive impact.

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ flagship day for encouraging global awareness and action to protect the environment. Celebrated every year on 5 June, it serves as a reminder that the Earth is our shared home—and looking after it is not optional, but essential. In 2025, World Environment Day falls on a Thursday, providing a timely opportunity for individuals, businesses, governments, and communities across South Africa—and around the globe—to unite in the fight against climate change and environmental destruction.

This annual observance, first established in 1972, has grown into a global platform involving millions of people in over 150 countries. Each year, a specific theme and host country is chosen to spotlight urgent environmental issues and encourage positive change.

The 2025 Theme – “Restore Our Earth”

World Environment Day 2025 has a continued focus0. on themes such as ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable living. Previous years have explored issues like plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, and air pollution—highlighting that the planet’s challenges are interlinked, and solutions require collective action.

In the South African context, this message resonates deeply. With pressing concerns like water scarcity, illegal dumping, deforestation, and energy insecurity, World Environment Day 2025 provides an ideal platform to spark discussions, encourage green initiatives, and inspire people to protect their natural heritage.

Why World Environment Day Matters in South Africa

South Africa’s rich biodiversity and natural resources are both a blessing and a responsibility. From the Kruger National Park to the Cape Floral Region, our ecosystems support not only wildlife but also tourism, agriculture, and local livelihoods. Yet, they are under growing threat from pollution, climate change, and unsustainable practices.

World Environment Day matters because:

  • It raises awareness about local and global environmental challenges.
  • It encourages community participation in tree planting, clean-up drives, and conservation projects.
  • It gives a voice to youth and grassroots movements leading climate action efforts.
  • It promotes sustainable habits like recycling, water conservation, and eco-friendly transport.
  • It reminds us that every small action, when multiplied, can lead to meaningful change.

How You Can Get Involved in World Environment Day 2025

Whether you’re an individual, school, business, or organisation, there are many ways to participate in World Environment Day:

  • Plant indigenous trees or start a garden: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, reduce soil erosion, and support local ecosystems.
  • Organise a local clean-up: Beaches, parks, rivers, and streets benefit from community-led efforts to remove waste and restore beauty.
  • Host an educational session: Spread awareness in your school, workplace, or online about climate change and how to take action.
  • Support green businesses: Choose products that are locally made, sustainably sourced, and packaged with care for the environment.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint: Walk or cycle instead of driving, limit single-use plastics, and adopt energy-saving habits at home.

Small lifestyle changes—when embraced collectively—can help South Africa transition towards a more resilient and eco-conscious future.

The Future Is in Our Hands

World Environment Day 2025 is not just a celebration—it’s a global movement. It calls on each of us to be stewards of the Earth, to take action against the degradation of our natural world, and to push for a future where people and nature coexist in harmony.

In South Africa, where the environment is both beautiful and vulnerable, now is the time to act. Let’s restore our ecosystems, rethink our habits, and reimagine a greener tomorrow. Because the Earth doesn’t only need saving—it needs partners.

14 small, easy ways I’m being more environmentally active

by Tanya Kovarsky, Rattle & Mum November 27, 2024

Being environmentally active doesn’t have to mean making drastic changes overnight. For me, it’s about the little things I can do daily that contribute to a greener, more sustainable world. From cutting down on single-use plastics to upcycling old items, I’ve discovered that small, consistent actions can make a significant difference. Written by Tanya Kovarsky, Rattle & Mum.

I am by no means a tree hugger, environmental activist or “all-green”. I still drive everywhere, take baths (I live in Joburg, but still), fly places and use plastic. However, I want to at least try to be more environmentally friendly in my consumption and behaviour, and when it comes to my kids too.

I do small things, and while I know they won’t stop global warming or help ease the water crisis in Cape Town (unless I’m there and use water sparingly), maybe my bit and your bit and his bit and her bit could contribute towards less waste and consumption – and a healthier environment? And if I carry on taking small steps, my kids could likely follow my steps and affect change too.

“Maybe my bit and your bit and his bit and her bit could contribute towards less waste and consumption – and a healthier environment?”

Here’s my list:

  1. I collect all my recyclables (paper, plastic and glass) and I pay a service, Eco Monkey, to collect it all every two weeks. I know there are similar services around the country (you can Google them), and there’s also the option of leaving your recyclables out for the men who collect them to earn a bit of money.
  2. My kids get their lunches in lunchboxes and not packets.
  3. My kids share the same bath water. After my toddler’s bath, my son will add a bit of hot water and bubbles, and he’s good to go.
  4. As tempting as it is to buy grapes from Spain when ours are out of season, I don’t.
  5. I’ve started taking a travel mug around with me and instead of getting my takeaway Americanos in a paper cup with a plastic lid, I get my mug filled up.
  6. I’m easing into buying cleaning detergents that are eco-friendly in ingredients and packaging.
  7. All our light bulbs are LED, which use less electricity.
  8. I’ve ditched paper towel and use only cloth towels.
  9. I’m starting to use canvas shopping bags instead of plastic ones.
  10. I don’t leave lights on if they’re not being used.
  11. I switch the water off when I’m shaving my legs (if you knew how long shaving takes me, you’d realise how much water I save).
  12. We have a solar geyser.
  13. We switch off the electrical element for the solar geyser when we go away for a long weekend or longer.
  14. A few years ago, we started only buying energy-efficient appliances where we could.

Earth Day 22 April 2024 in South Africa

by Ally Cohen, Content Creator and Digital Marketer April 18, 2024
written by Ally Cohen, Content Creator and Digital Marketer

Discover how parents can inspire environmental awareness in their children on Earth Day 22 April 2024 in South Africa. Get involved with fun activities to foster a greener future. By Ally Cohen.

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation. It’s also an opportunity to instill eco-conscious values in their children. By teaching them about looking after the environment,  parents can empower the next generation to become advocates for our planet’s well-being.

Earth Day traces its roots back to 1970 when millions of people across the globe rallied to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Parents as role models

Parents play a pivotal role in shaping their children’s attitudes and behaviors towards the environment. By fostering a love for nature and instilling a sense of responsibility, parents can nurture future environmental leaders. Engaging children in discussions about sustainability and involving them in eco-friendly activities can sow the seeds for a lifelong commitment to protecting the planet.

Creative activities

One of the most effective ways to teach children about the environment is through hands-on activities. Encourage outdoor exploration by organising nature walks or birdwatching outings. Engage their creativity with art projects using recycled materials, turning waste into whimsical masterpieces. Gardening provides another opportunity for children to connect with nature while learning about the importance of biodiversity.

Online resources

In today’s digital age, there is no shortage of educational resources available to parents and children alike. From books and documentaries to interactive websites and apps, there are countless ways to learn about environmental issues in a fun and engaging manner. Organisations such as Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund offer a wealth of educational materials tailored to young learners.

Sustainable habits

Teaching children about the three R’s—reduce, reuse, recycle—is a cornerstone of environmental education. Encourage them to adopt eco-friendly habits such as turning off lights when leaving a room, using reusable water bottles and lunch containers, and composting food waste. By incorporating these habits into their daily routines, children can make a tangible difference in reducing their ecological footprint.

Parents play a pivotal role in shaping their children's attitudes and behaviors towards the environment.

Community engagement

Beyond the home, parents can encourage their children to get involved in community-based environmental initiatives. Whether it’s participating in beach clean-ups, tree planting events, or community gardens, these activities foster a sense of belonging and collective responsibility. Earth Day provides an excellent opportunity for families to come together and make a positive impact in their local communities.

Lead by example

As role models, parents have the power to influence their children’s behavior through their own actions. By adopting sustainable practices such as using public transportation, conserving water and energy, and supporting environmentally conscious businesses, parents can lead by example. Demonstrating a commitment to sustainability sends a powerful message to children about the importance of living in harmony with nature.

Talk about it

Encourage open dialogue with your children about environmental issues, allowing them to ask questions and express their concerns. Foster critical thinking skills by discussing current events related to climate change and biodiversity loss. By creating a safe space for conversation, parents can empower their children to become informed and engaged global citizens.

Celebrate Earth Day together

Make Earth Day a family affair by planning activities that celebrate our planet’s beauty and diversity. Whether it’s planting a tree,  a neighborhood clean-up, or enjoying a picnic in the park, there are countless ways to mark the occasion. Emphasize the importance of working together as a family to protect the environment for future generations.

8 Ways to Foster Nature-Loving Kids and Protect the Planet

by BabyYumYum September 19, 2019
written by BabyYumYum

Raising children who care for the environment starts with small, intentional actions. 8 ways to foster nature-loving kids and help save the world include encouraging outdoor play, introducing them to wildlife, and modelling sustainable habits. Every experience nurtures curiosity, respect, and responsibility for the planet. By making nature a regular part of your family’s life, children learn to value the environment and understand the importance of protecting it. Simple activities like gardening, recycling, or exploring local parks can make a lasting impression.

According to experts, the “lungs of the planet” are burning. In August, there were more than 30 000 fires in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, destroying an ecosystem that is vital there and around the world. As the world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon produces 20% of the oxygen in the atmosphere, which is why it’s considered the “lungs of the planet”.

While there might not be a lot we can do here in South Africa to help with the devastation in the Amazon aside from donating to the likes of the WWF Emergency Fund, we could make choices here that can help the planet, and teaching our kids a love of nature. It’s also Arbour Month this September, so we have some great ideas for fostering a love and knowledge of trees in your kids.

“There are many nature-related arts and crafts ideas online, which are fun and educational too.”

  1. Plant a tree! Take your kids to a garden centre or nursery, and choose a seedling or fruit seed to plant at home. Kids will enjoy watching their tree grow, and perhaps one day will enjoy the fruits of their labour!
  1. Learn about trees. Walk through your suburb or park, and try to learn and identify trees in their environment. There are apps that can help with this, such as TheTreeApp.
  1. Make some tree and flower art. Who remembers pressing leaves and flowers between sheets of wax paper, and placing them in an encyclopaedia to get flat, to be used for art and other pretty things? There are many nature-related arts and crafts ideas online, which are fun and educational too.
  1. Climb a tree! Let’s go back to our roots (literally) and climb a big tree. Just make sure you can get up and down safely!
  1. Spend time outdoors to encourage a love of nature. Observe things together like cloud formations, colourful flowers or what trees look like in the different seasons.
  1. Reduce, reuse and recycle, and teach this by doing, not just by saying. Reduce your use of plastic at home, and actively recycle, whether it’s by dropping your goods off at recycling points or getting your recyclables collected. Also, try to save materials that can be used for art projects or playschool activities.
  1. Remind your children about the importance of saving water when washing their hands, taking a shower or cleaning dishes.
  1. Grow a veggie patch at home with the kids. You’ll save money on store-bought fruit and vegetables, plus it’s very rewarding growing and tending to produce that you can eat.

7 Eco-Friendly Baby Room Ideas for New Parents

by BabyYumYum August 27, 2019
written by BabyYumYum

Preparing your baby’s room is one of the most exciting parts of getting ready for parenthood. These 7 eco-friendly baby room ideas for new parents will help you create a calming, beautiful space that also protects the planet. From choosing sustainable furniture to using toxin-free paints and organic fabrics, every eco choice you make is a gift to your baby and the Earth. With these 7 eco-friendly baby room ideas for new parents, creating a green nursery is easier—and more stylish—than ever.

If it’s time to decorate your nursery, how about opting for something that’s beneficial for your baby and the environment?

Did you know that the air indoors is up to three to five times more polluted than outside air, owing to harmful chemicals and other materials? And when you consider a baby’s immunity is still developing, and the amount of time they spend indoors, perhaps there’s a gentler way of equipping and cleaning our homes that’s better for our health – and the environment.

With the rise of “eco-awareness” and the consciousness of plastic consumption, green is becoming the new black, and we predict that this care of the environment will continue to move into our homes, and particularly baby nurseries.

If you’re looking to create a greener and less toxic space for you and your baby, just start, says Dr Romy Levy, a Johannesburg mother of five, and a homeopath, who along with her husband Avin, created SoPure, a range of chemical-free home and body products. Romy is committed to gentler cleaning and living spaces, and advises people not to be overwhelmed when making eco-friendly changes.

“If you’re starting out, try cutting out some chemical-laden products such as bleach and laundry detergent. Buying things like wooden toys, chemical-free paint and furniture that can be repurposed are significant and doable.”

“We think that small steps that are sustainable are more meaningful than trying to many changes that you can’t stick to,” says Romy. “If you’re starting out, try cutting out some chemical-laden products such as bleach and laundry detergent. Buying things like wooden toys, chemical-free paint and furniture that can be repurposed are significant and doable.”

Romy’s 7 tips for setting up an eco-friendly nursery:

  1. Repurpose furniture. You might have an item of furniture gathering dust that with a lick of paint could make a good addition to your nursery. Or you might have a single sofa that could be used as a feeding chair, and it just needs re-upholstering (remember that lots of comfortable chairs can be used for feeding). You’ll save money this way, and there’ll be a “history” to your baby’s room.
  2. Paint safely. Lots of paints contain harmful chemicals, the worst of which is volatile organic compounds (VOC), which has been linked to cancer. Before you paint the walls or furniture, check what’s in it and opt for a kinder variety with low- or zero VOCs.
  3. Natural cot mattresses. Most of our time goes towards choosing a beautiful cot but the mattress is just as important. Ensure that your mattress doesn’t have plastic, fire retardants, vinyl, foam or other harmful substances. When choosing a mattress, look for one made with wool, cotton or other natural fibres.
  4. Check the furniture. While most of us want the Pinterest-perfect nursery, we should be cautious about what’s in some of that pretty furniture. Formaldehyde is often found in cheaper furniture materials such as plywood, and it can cause allergic reactions, coughing, and eye, skin and nose irritations. Try to use solid wood such as maple, oak and pine, which doesn’t contain any formaldehyde.
  5. Limit harsh cleaning products. Chemical-based cleaning products, including dishwashing liquid, washing powder and most fabric softeners can be harmful, and release toxins, putting us at risk of illness, allergies and disease. We’re not saying don’t clean, but rather use natural or plant-based cleaning products, which work just as well as traditional cleaners, but are far safer.
  6. Go bare floored. While they might seem warm and cosy, carpets harbour allergens and dust mites, and synthetic carpets contain harmful toxins. If you can, choose a wooden, cork or natural linoleum floor. If you want to incorporate a rug, ensure it’s made from sustainable materials, is undyed, and easy to clean.
  7. Buy better toys. Check that the toys you buy don’t contain harmful lead or BPA, which is a common plastic additive, as babies tend to put all toys in their mouth, A great option is wooden toys – they’re sustainable, durable and long-lasting, and timeless. Also look for toys that are battery-free, made from recycled plastic and wood, or organic cotton.

FAQ’s on Eco-Friendly Baby Room Ideas for New Parents

What does it mean to have an eco-friendly baby room?

An eco-friendly baby room is designed using sustainable, non-toxic, and environmentally conscious materials and practices. This includes choosing furniture made from responsibly sourced wood, organic textiles, and natural, low-VOC paints to create a safe and healthy environment for your baby.

Why should I choose organic materials for my baby’s room?

Organic materials, such as cotton or bamboo, are free from harmful pesticides and chemicals. Using these materials in bedding, clothing, and curtains helps reduce your baby’s exposure to toxins and supports better indoor air quality.

Are eco-friendly baby products available in South Africa?

Yes, South Africa has a growing market for eco-conscious products. Many local retailers and online stores now stock organic bedding, sustainable cots, biodegradable nappies, and natural cleaning products specifically tailored for babies.

How can I make my baby’s room more energy efficient?

You can install energy-efficient LED lighting, make use of natural daylight where possible, and ensure good insulation. Using a ceiling fan instead of an air conditioner can also reduce electricity usage while keeping the room cool.

What type of paint should I use in an eco-friendly nursery?

Look for low-VOC or zero-VOC paints, which release fewer toxic chemicals into the air. These are better for your baby’s health and reduce indoor air pollution.

Are second-hand baby items safe and eco-friendly?

Yes, using gently used or second-hand items like cots, dressers, or baby clothes reduces waste and is budget-friendly. Just make sure any item meets current safety standards and is properly sanitised.

How do I reduce plastic in my baby’s nursery?

Opt for wooden or fabric toys instead of plastic ones, and choose storage bins made from natural fibres like cotton or jute. Avoid unnecessary plastic packaging by shopping from eco-conscious local brands.

Can indoor plants improve the air quality in my baby’s room?

Yes, certain indoor plants such as peace lilies or spider plants can help purify the air. However, ensure they are non-toxic and placed out of reach of little hands.

Is cloth nappying a good option for eco-conscious parents?

Cloth nappies reduce landfill waste and can save money in the long run. Many South African brands now offer modern cloth nappies that are easy to use, absorbent, and come in fun designs.

Focus on creating a safe, non-toxic space that supports both your baby’s well-being and the environment. This includes being mindful of what you bring into the room, choosing quality over quantity, and opting for sustainable, durable products.
