If 2025 delivered some memorable family films, 2026 is shaping up to be even bigger. From long-awaited sequels and beloved children’s book adaptations to exciting new animated adventures, families will have plenty of reasons to head to the cinema. Whether your child loves talking animals, dinosaurs, superheroes or magical worlds, there is something on the release calendar to suit almost every age and interest.

Here are some of the most anticipated kids’ movies coming out in 2026.

Toy Story 5

More than 30 years after the original film introduced audiences to Woody and Buzz Lightyear, Pixar is returning to one of its most successful franchises. This new adventure explores how toys compete for children’s attention in a world increasingly dominated by technology and screens. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return to voice Woody and Buzz, while several new characters join the story. The film is scheduled for release in June 2026. For many parents, this will be a nostalgic trip back to childhood. For today’s kids, it could become their first Toy Story cinema experience.

Hoppers

Pixar’s original animated film for 2026 follows a young animal lover who uses advanced technology to communicate with animals by inhabiting a robotic beaver. The result is a funny and heartfelt adventure that combines environmental themes with Pixar’s trademark humour and emotion. Original stories have become increasingly rare in animation, making Hoppers one of the most intriguing family releases of the year.

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie

The pups are heading to dinosaur territory in their latest big-screen adventure. When the PAW Patrol team becomes stranded on an island filled with dinosaurs, they must work together to protect both the island and its prehistoric inhabitants from disaster. Given the enormous popularity of the television series among younger children, this is likely to be one of the biggest preschool releases of the year.

The Cat in the Hat

Dr Seuss’s famous troublemaker returns in a brand-new animated adaptation. Featuring a fresh take on the classic story, the film aims to introduce the beloved character to a new generation while staying closer to the spirit of the original books. Families familiar with Dr Seuss’s whimsical worlds will likely find plenty to enjoy here.

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender

Fans of the hugely successful Avatar universe have been waiting years for this one. The animated feature follows older versions of the beloved characters from the original series and expands the world that captivated millions of viewers around the globe. While younger children may not fully appreciate the deeper themes, tweens and teens are likely to be counting down the days until release.

The Angry Birds Movie 3

The feathery rivals return for another adventure packed with comedy, chaos and over-the-top action. The previous films proved surprisingly popular with family audiences and the third instalment hopes to continue that success. Expect plenty of visual humour and familiar characters that younger viewers already know and love.

The Magic Faraway Tree

Based on the classic children’s books by Enid Blyton, this magical adventure follows a family who discover an extraordinary tree filled with fantastical worlds and unforgettable characters. With a strong cast and decades of literary popularity behind it, this could become one of the standout family films of the year. For parents who grew up reading the books, this adaptation offers a chance to share a beloved childhood story with their own children.

GOAT

One of the newer animated releases generating buzz for 2026, GOAT promises a fun sports-themed adventure with humour, heart and plenty of action. Family audiences looking for something completely new may find this one particularly appealing.

Why 2026 Looks Like a Great Year for Family Movies

What stands out about the 2026 movie slate is its variety. Studios are not relying solely on sequels. Alongside established franchises such as Toy Story and PAW Patrol, audiences will also see fresh stories, classic book adaptations and entirely new worlds. For parents, that means more opportunities to find films that appeal to the whole family rather than just one age group. For children, it means a year filled with dinosaurs, talking animals, magical adventures, superheroes and plenty of laughter.

Conclusion

From the return of Woody and Buzz to dinosaur-filled rescue missions and magical trees that transport children to extraordinary worlds, 2026 is packed with family-friendly entertainment. Whether you’re planning school holiday outings, birthday treats, or simply looking for the next movie night favourite, these upcoming releases are well worth adding to your watchlist. The hardest part may simply be deciding which one to see first.

As schools close for the mid-year break and families start looking for fun ways to keep the kids entertained, Ster-Kinekor has packed the upcoming mid-year break with an exciting line-up of movies, special events and great-value deals.

From colourful adventures for younger children to action-packed blockbusters for teens, the big screen is set to become the ultimate holiday destination for families, friends and besties looking to spend quality time together.

The school holiday movie fun starts with the return of some of the world’s most-loved toys when Toy Story 5 releases in IMAX® on 19 June. Join Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the rest of the toy box gang as they embark on another unforgettable adventure. When Bonnie receives a Lilypad tablet as a gift and becomes obsessed, the toys’ jobs become that much harder when they must go head-to-head with the all-new technology threat to playtime.

South Africans have an extra reason to celebrate the release of this popular franchise title, with global music sensation Tyla lending her voice to a brand-new character – the Inflatable Flamingo, who is set to bring plenty of personality and laughs to the latest instalment.

Next up, the lovable, yellow and mischievous troublemakers are back in Minions & Monsters, releasing in Ster-Kinekor cinemas from 26 June. This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.

Minions fans can also enjoy a fun-filled character roadshow at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas between 27 June and 19 July, offering photo opportunities and interactive entertainment for young moviegoers.

Sea-loving adventurers can look forward to the release of Moana (Live Action), when it swims onto Ster-Kinekor screens from 10 July in IMAX® and other cinemas. Prompted by a summons from the ocean, Moana leaves her home island of Motunui for the first time and travels past its barrier reef. Accompanied by the demigod Maui, she undertakes a voyage aimed at recovering the well-being of her community. This film promises to be one of the holiday season’s must-see family releases.

The Minions Tour dates and cinema sites are:

Date Time Destination
27 Jun 11:00 to 16:00 Mall of Africa, Johannesburg
29 Jun 11:00 to 16:00 The Grove Mall, Tshwane
30 Jun 11:30 to 14:30 Eastgate, Johannesburg
30 Jun 16:00 to 19:00 The Zone @ Rosebank, Johannesburg
05 Jul 11:00 to 16:00 V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
07 Jul Blue Route Mall, Cape Town
18 Jul 11:00 to 16:00 iLanga Mall, Mbombela
19 Jul 11:00 to 16:00 Mall of the North, Polokwane

(Moana contains several sequences with flashing lights that may affect those who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy or have other photo sensitivities.)

Families can also enjoy all these exciting titles in Ster-Kinekor’s vibrant and colourful Kids’ Cinemas, specially designed to make movie-going even more magical for younger audiences. Bright, playful, and packed with personality, these unique cinemas create an environment where children can fully immerse themselves in the stories unfolding on the screen, while having a fun time inside the cinema with its colourful seats and slide and ball pool.

The Kids’ Cinemas can be found at Ster-Kinekor The Zone @ Rosebank, Sandton City, Fourways Mall, Carnival City and Irene in Gauteng, and at Blue Route, V&A Waterfront and Capegate in Cape Town.

For families who love a touch of nostalgia, Ster-Kinekor’s popular Throwback Cinema promotion brings back two family favourites during the holidays, with the ticket price at just R50. Stuart Little returns to select cinemas from 26 June for a limited two-week run. When the Little family adopts Stuart, George is initially unwelcoming to his new ’brother’, while the family cat, Snowbell, is even less enthusiastic. Stuart resolves to face these difficulties with all the courage his little self can muster.

This is followed by the delightful musical first released in 1982, Annie, from 10 July. Annie, an orphan in a facility run by the mean Miss Hannigan, believes her parents left her there by mistake. When a rich man named Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks decides to let an orphan live at his home to promote his image, Annie is selected. While Annie gets accustomed to living in Warbucks’ mansion, she still longs to meet her parents, so Warbucks announces a search for them with a reward.

Teen audiences are not forgotten either. They can gear up for the arrival of two highly anticipated blockbusters, both filmed for IMAX. First up is a new superhero, Supergirl, soaring into cinemas, including IMAX® screens from 25 June. Christopher Nolan’s epic historical adventure The Odyssey, the first film to be shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, releases in IMAX® from 17 July. Both these films promise to deliver the kind of immersive cinematic experience that can only truly be appreciated on the IMAX screen.

BabyYumYum Sparkles At The African Premiere for ‘Wicked For Good’!

by Rianette Leibowitz December 1, 2025
written by Rianette Leibowitz

Some moments feel bigger than a movie night, and as BabyYumYum, we had a chance to sparkle at the African premiere for 'Wicked For Good', where energy, colour and connection made the evening unforgettable. Families arrived buzzing with excitement, glowing in green and pink, ready to step into the world of Oz. The energy was infectious, the costumes were incredible, and the joy on the kids’ faces said everything. It wasn’t just a premiere, it was a celebration of magic, music and the stories that stay with us long after the curtain falls. For BabyYumYum, it was a proud moment to be part of something so special, and even more special to share it with our amazing community.

“Defying gravity” took on a whole new meaning at the African premiere of Wicked For Good held at Ster-Kinekor Eastgate Mall on 16 November 2025. From the very first scene and note, the production swept us into a kaleidoscope of emerald enchantment, dazzling costumes and voices that soared higher than the skies above Oz. It wasn’t just a movie; it was a spellbinding celebration of resilience, friendship and the power of choosing good even when the world tempts us otherwise.

BabyYumYum’s Founder and CEO, Amanda Rogaly, joined me, Managing Editor Rianette Leibowitz, for the premiere. Alongside a host of influencers, local celebrities and industry leaders, we embraced the pink and green theme. The venue was exquisitely decorated, and it felt like stepping into a special celebration (no spoilers) that can be witnessed during the movie. With a variety of photo booths, lights, camera and action, it felt like we had stepped into the fantastical world of Wicked.

Besides feeling like royalty from the moment we stepped onto the yellow brick road, we were treated to delicious refreshments.  We were also surprised with a beautiful goodie bag filled with pink and green trinkets, which was the ultimate special touch as we left the event. These will be continuous reminders of this momentous occasion, and BabyYumYum was there.

A must-watch film with so many talk points that parents can discuss with their children, with themes around friendships, family, caring for your community and the reality of letting go. Some of these themes touch the heart (and you might need a tissue) and give you the opportunity to, as a family, unpack what the characters experience and how they handle the situations.

May you enjoy the green, pink and spectacular Wicked For Good film!
