The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is heading into September with its grant verification process under increased scrutiny as government works to strengthen checks on who qualifies for social assistance.
National Treasury has made tighter compliance a condition of Sassa’s funding, with the agency required to improve biometric and income verification and conduct more frequent eligibility reviews. According to the 2026 Budget Review, Sassa had checked the bank accounts of about six million clients and the credit bureau records of eight million clients by December 2025. These checks flagged 291 581 beneficiaries for review.
For beneficiaries, the September payment cycle remains on schedule, but those who have been contacted for a review need to make sure they respond and provide the information requested by SASSA.
Sassa Payment Dates for September 2026
The official payment schedule confirms the following dates:
- Older Persons Grant: Wednesday, 2 September
- Disability Grant: Thursday, 3 September
- Children’s Grants: Friday, 4 September
The Children’s Grants payment covers the Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant and Care Dependency Grant.
The dates are part of Sassa’s official 2026/27 social grant payment schedule. Sassa says grants are staggered over three days and scheduled as early in the month as possible, while avoiding the first day of the month, Mondays, weekends and the day after a public holiday.
Why is Sassa Increasing Verification?
The tighter verification measures are aimed at ensuring that social grants are paid to eligible beneficiaries and that government can identify payments that no longer meet the relevant requirements.
National Treasury reported that Sassa’s checks had resulted in 34 661 grants being cancelled by the end of the 2025/26 financial year, with projected savings of R170.7 million. A further 8 599 disability and old-age grant recipients had their grant values adjusted after their income was assessed against the applicable eligibility criteria.
The National Treasury Budget Review says Sassa will intensify efforts to combat fraud and corruption while protecting legitimate beneficiaries.
Biometric verification has also been rolled out for new applicants, strengthening the way beneficiaries are authenticated when they apply for grants.
What Happens if You are Selected for a Sassa Review?
Being selected for a review does not automatically mean that a beneficiary has lost their grant.
The purpose of a review is to establish whether the beneficiary still meets the requirements for the grant. Sassa may ask the beneficiary to provide documents or confirm information about their financial and personal circumstances.
The agency’s official services portal lists supporting documents that may be required when dealing with grant applications and eligibility, including identification, proof of income and banking information.
Beneficiaries should not ignore a review notification. If Sassa requests additional information, failing to respond could affect the continuation of the grant if the agency cannot confirm that the beneficiary remains eligible.
Sassa Payment Dates for September and the SRD Grant
The R370 Social Relief of Distress grant operates separately from the main Sassa payment schedule.
SRD applications are assessed and verified each month, meaning beneficiaries do not receive their payments according to the Older Persons, Disability and Children’s grant dates.
The official Sassa SRD information states that beneficiaries should check their verification and payment status each month. Those whose applications are approved can check the payment information shown on their individual status.
What Beneficiaries Should Do Before September Payments
Beneficiaries who are not undergoing a review do not need to take any additional action ahead of the September payment cycle.
Those who have received a review notification, however, should make sure they complete the process and submit the required documentation within the timeframe provided by Sassa.
Beneficiaries can use the Sassa services portal to access grant-related services and information or contact Sassa directly if they experience problems with their grant.
