There is value in co-viewing. Watching your child’s favourite show with them might mean more to them than you think and offers you the perfect opportunity to teach them valuable skills through the on-screen characters they adore and love. By Rianette Leibowitz.

Cuddling up with your child, enjoying popcorn and watching their favourite show together can be loads of fun and time to relax. It also creates the perfect opportunity for you as parent to talk about the on-screen characters, their adventures and the challenges they face. Through each episode you can teach your child valuable skills by talking about the life lessons we learn through the shows we watch.

Content creators and streaming platforms give attention to the story lines and the types of adventures their characters go on. They also put effort into the personalities of the characters and how each reacts to the obstacles they face in the episodes we watch.

By co-viewing with your child, you can talk about what happened, how they would react in a similar situation, ask how the episode made them feel and what they learned. In this way, you don’t only have a perfect basis for the conversation to start and to build on, but also an exciting opportunity to hear your child’s thoughts and get to know them better.

I spoke about the value of co-viewing with Monika Ooman, the vice-president of Brand, Communications and Digital Content Strategy for Kids EMEA at Warner Bros. Discovery. Monika joined the conversation online all the way from London to share more about the Batwheels storyline, characters, and ways to join your children on this high-speed adventure.

To make this specific co-viewing experience a little easier, we are sharing the downloadable Tip Sheet with talking points for parents to kick start the conversation with your child. Get ready to join the Batwheels crew and watch the show with your children, because there will be lots to chat to your children about – from the challenges the characters need to work through to the meaning of kindness and teamwork.

Batwheels season 2 on Cartoonito Africa (DStv 302).
