This Easter break, families can holiday without the horrors. As a special treat, DStv is opening the M-Net Movies MM1, MM3, and MM4 channels to Access subscribers from 1 April to 4 May. For parents who’d appreciate the opportunity to sleep in, there is a 6 am kids’ movie premiere every day of the week.

Here’s DStv’s handy pick of movies, series, and documentaries for the whole family.

DAVID

A young shepherd, a towering giant and a local animation studio that surprised the world. 

Directed by Zimbabwe-born, Cape Town-based filmmakers Phil Cunningham and Brent Dawes, David was created by more than 400 artists across 32 countries, with production led from Sunrise’s studio in Noordhoek. 

Grammy nominee Phil Wickham leads the cast in the musical adaptation, which features an original score by Joseph Trapanese (The Greatest Showman). 

In a David vs Goliath story of its own, the biblical epic became one of the 10 biggest animated hits globally last year and the top-performing local film in South African cinemas.

After Gary De’Snake turns the animal megacity upside down, rookie cop partners Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde uncover buried secrets about its construction 100 years earlier. 

Kids’ Choice winners Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman return as Judy and Nick in this sequel to the Oscar-winning buddy-cop comedy. Emmy winners Quinta Brunson and Andy Samberg join the cast, alongside Danny Trejo and Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan. 

With a 91% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Zootropolis 2 was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar and won the Best Animated Film BAFTA this year.

Fun fact: While the film title is Zootopia 2 in the US, Disney was unable to trademark the title in parts of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, because of a Danish zoo having registered the name in 2010.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON | Ages 6+
M-Net Movies 1 (DStv Channel 104) | 11:45 am on Thursday, 26 March

The eighth-biggest box office hit of 2025 globally, How To Train Your Dragon reimagines the Oscar-nominated franchise as a live-action epic.

On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast, Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. 

Mason Thames (The Black Phone) stars as Hiccup, with Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid, Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as Gobber, and Gerard Butler back as Chief Stoick.  

Oscar nominee Dean deBlois, who helmed the animated franchise, writes, directs and produces the film, which boasts BAFTA-nominated VFX and a Grammy-nominated score by John Powell (Wicked).

The now-reformed Bad Guys are trying to be good but instead find themselves hijacked into a globe-trotting heist masterminded by a new team of criminals: the Bad Girls.

Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, Emmy winner Awkwafina, Grammy winner Anthony Ramos, Emmy nominee Craig Robinson and comedian Marc Maron return to voice the Bad Guys. Oscar nominees Danielle Brooks (A Minecraft Movie) and Maria Bakalova (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) join Emmy nominee Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll, Poker Face) as the Bad Girls.

The Bad Guys 2 was nominated for Best Animated Film at the 2026 Annie Awards and holds an 87% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Guardian calls it “snappier, funnier and more relaxed than the first film”.

MR. CROCODILE SEASON 1 | All ages 

Nick Jr. (DStv Channel 307) | 17:30 on weekdays from Monday, 30 March

The toothy, lovable Mr Crocodile lives with his best friend Daisy, splitting their time between Daisy’s mom and dad’s mobile homes.

The series is based on Joann Sfar’s beloved children’s book, Mister Crocodile is Very Hungry. 

Common Sense Media calls Mr Crocodile “fun for young kids and the whole family,” praising its “whimsical visuals” and “parental representation”.

GABBY’S DOLLHOUSE: THE MOVIE | Ages 4+

Laila Lockhart Kraner reprises her role from the Kidscreen Award-winning preschool series as Gabby. She heads out on a road trip to the urban wonderland of Cat Francisco with her Grandma Gigi (four-time Grammy winner Gloria Estefan). 

When Gabby’s dollhouse, her most prized possession, ends up in the hands of an eccentric cat lady named Vera (Oscar nominee Kristen Wiig), Gabby sets off on an adventure through the real world to reunite the Gabby Cats and save the dollhouse.

With an 85% critics’ rating, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie was nominated for a Golden Tomato from Rotten Tomatoes for the Fan Favourite Family Movie of 2025. 

According to Nielsen, the series was the ninth most-streamed in the US in 2024.

SECRETS OF THE BEES | Ages 4+

National Geographic Wild (DStv Channel 182) | 18:00 on Saturday, 4 April

Emmy-winning National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory reveals the hidden lives of bees, using specialised cameras to film inside a single beehive for three years. 

More than 20,000 bee species pollinate one-third of the world’s food. 

“Bees are socially complex, fast-thinking individuals and the most important insects on our planet,” says Oscar-winning executive producer James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic). “We’re only just beginning to see how extraordinary they truly are.”

TALES OF THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES S2 | Ages 8+

NickToons (DStv Channel 308) | 16:00 on weekdays until 26 March

When Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mikey each go it alone for the first time, the Turtles discover who they really are without their brothers by their side. 

Featuring the same key voice cast as Mutant Mayhem, including Emmy winner Ayo Edibiri and Oscar nominee Rose Byrne, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was up for three 2026 Annie Awards in February, including Best Animated Television/Media Production for Children. 

Animated in 2D by Titmouse (The Legend of Vox Machina), the 12-part series has a 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Collider calls the series “a terrific follow-up” to Mutant Mayhem with “humour and wonderful characters.”

JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH | Ages 13+

Rebirth sees an extraction team race to the most dangerous place on Earth, inhabited by the worst of the worst dinosaurs, left behind on an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park.

Double-Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson, People’s Sexiest Man 2025 Jonathan Bailey, and two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali co-star. 

The sixth-biggest box office hit of 2025 globally, Jurassic World: Rebirth, was up for an Oscar for its VFX. 

“What a comeback,” The Guardian says in their 4/5-star review. “A brighter, breezier, funnier, incomparably better-acted and better-written film.”
