National Children’s Day Highlights Urgent Needs – Supporting South Africa’s Youngest

by Press Release November 2, 2024
written by Press Release

Every year, National Children’s Day serves as a vital reminder of the rights, well-being, and urgent needs of children in South Africa. While childhood should be a time of growth, learning, and joy, many children face challenges such as poverty, lack of access to education, and inadequate healthcare. This year’s National Children’s Day highlights the need for collective action to ensure that every child in South Africa receives the protection, opportunities, and care they deserve. From advocating for better education and healthcare to supporting initiatives that uplift vulnerable children, we all have a role to play in creating a brighter future for our youngest generation.

This National Childrens Day 2024, we are faced with a significant challenge for our nation’s most vulnerable. South Africa’s latest Child Gauge report from the University of Cape Town’s Children’s Institute has raised serious concerns over the state of early childhood care and education in the country. *

With chronic underfunding, rising poverty, and significant gaps in health and learning services, the well-being of the nation’s youngest is at risk. The findings reveal that nearly one in five infants is not fully immunised by their first birthday, one in six children in poverty is not receiving child support, and only two-thirds of children aged three to five are enrolled in early learning programmes. These shortfalls and, stagnant funding, and a growing child poverty rate hinder the foundation necessary for children’s future health and success.

Ursula Assis, Country Director of Dibber International Preschools, shares practical advice for parents and teachers looking to support young children amid these ongoing challenges. “While we must address these systemic issues at a national level, parents, caregivers, and educators can also play a direct role in helping children feel secure, supported, and ready to learn, even in these difficult times,” says Assis.

At home, Assis advises parents to create consistent routines for young children to foster a sense of stability and security. “Routines help children feel in control of their environment, which reduces anxiety,” she explains. “Simple daily rituals, such as shared mealtimes, regular reading sessions, or a bedtime routine, provide essential structure and offer a reliable space for children to connect emotionally with family members.”

Assis suggests turning everyday tasks into educational moments for parents facing financial constraints. “Cooking together, sorting items by colour or size, or even gardening can be rich learning experiences. These activities build confidence, creativity, and basic skills that support early cognitive development.”

In the classroom, teachers can create safe and inclusive environments, adapting learning activities to address diverse needs and developmental levels. “When classrooms become communities of respect and cooperation, young children feel more confident to engage and explore,” Assis notes. She encourages educators to incorporate play-based learning that encourages problem-solving and social interaction, providing children with a stable, nurturing foundation.

Furthermore, Assis highlights the importance of recognising emotional cues in children, especially those who may be struggling with poverty or family stress. “Teachers and parents can help children identify and express their feelings in a healthy way, guiding them to cope with emotions through supportive conversations and comforting activities, such as storytelling or drawing,” she says. “It’s crucial that children know their emotions are valued and that they have trusted adults to help them process those feelings.”

Addressing nutrition needs, Assis underscores that meal and snack times are learning opportunities that also foster a sense of community. “Food insecurity is a real issue, so any chance to share food and discuss healthy eating helps children learn about nourishment and connection,” she explains.

While South Africa faces complex challenges in early childhood care, Assis remains hopeful. “The support that parents and teachers provide at home and in the classroom can make a profound difference in helping children grow into resilient, well-rounded individuals,” she concludes. “Together, we can help our youngest generation thrive, one small act of support at a time.”

A guide for parents returning to work after a child

by Dibber October 4, 2023
written by Dibber

Returning to work after having a child can be both exciting and challenging. For many parents, balancing career and family life feels like stepping into a new world. This guide for parents returning to work after a child covers everything from managing your emotions to choosing reliable childcare and creating a balanced routine.

Getting back to work that you enjoy doing need not take a back seat after having a child, nor does it have to fasten that seat belt and take you on a never-ending guilt trip. Whether you are returning to work for the sheer love of working, for your emotional wellbeing, to feel more confident, for a stable income, to contribute to the family income, or for all of these, it is absolutely alright.

Here are some tips for parents who still feel that going back to work after having a child can be worrying, guilt-ridden, demanding, and to those that are experiencing stress because it is time to start sending their toddler to preschool:

Get your routine changed even before you return to work

Not seeing you as often as they used to can be overwhelming for your little one. If you start getting your routine changed before you go back to work, your child will have the time to adjust to the new routine. This will make the transition easier for both you and your child.

Begin slowly and steadily

The transition back to work after having a child can be stressful. If it is an option, you can look at working from home or for shorter hours physically at office. These may help reduce anxiety by giving you more control over your environment and by allowing you to take breaks when your child needs you.

Teach them to have warm social interactions

Preschool is a social environment, and toddlers who interact with others warmly and gently are more likely to make friends. It will help them develop empathy and build self-confidence. By teaching them compassion, you can also help them learn how to resolve conflict peacefully.

Talk to your toddler about preschool

One of the best ways to prepare your little one for preschool is by having conversations around it. Let your toddler know that you are excited for them to start school and maybe also share fun stories from your school days to encourage and get them excited about learning and making new friends.

Come up with meal plans and cooking shortcuts

Meal planning can help you make healthy meals for you and your children without spending a lot of time in the kitchen. When you have a schedule and some cooking shortcuts in place, you don’t have to worry about what to make each day. This can reduce strain and make it easier to manage time.

Stay in touch with your toddler’s teachers

When you have a good relationship with the teachers, you are more likely to feel comfortable talking to them about your toddler’s progress and any concerns you may have. It helps you stay informed about your child’s development and understand how you can support their learning at home.

Make your toddler feel safe and secure

When you go back to work, your child’s routine is sure to change. They will no longer have you around all day, and they may feel scared or insecure. By making them feel safe and settled, you can help them adjust to the new routine more easily.

Ask for help if you need

Taking your sleep-deprived-self back to work after having a baby can be overwhelming. Asking for help from parents, or close family and friends can free up some of your time and energy. This can help you ensure that your toddler is getting the care they need, while you sort whatever else needs your attention.

Enjoy this new chapter in your life together

This tip may seem like a no-brainer but may not be easy all the time. It is important for your toddler to see you going to work and coming home happy; they will learn that work is a positive thing. They will also be more likely to develop a positive attitude towards work themselves when they are older. This will help you enjoy this new life better with you little one.

Starting or resuming work and sending your little one to preschool is a big deal but a rewarding experience, nevertheless. By following the above-mentioned points, you may gain more patience, energy, and warmth to put into your relationship with your toddler. Why Choose Dibber International Preschools

Choosing a preschool & getting your toddler excited about it!

by Dibber September 18, 2023
written by Dibber

It is no secret that we start worrying about our children even before they are born; it could be anything from thinking about their health and safety, early learning, how they might build their communication and fine motor skills, whether they would be socially awkward or easy-going, and if it would be an effortless task to get them to pick the basic etiquettes of the daily life or not. Many more such questions and thoughts keep popping up in our minds every now and then.

Choosing a Preschool for your Toddler

What happens when it is time to start early education and choose a preschool for your toddler? Needless to say, it becomes a big decision to make and sometimes a daunting task as well.

Here are a few factors you could keep in mind while choosing a preschool:

  • Pedagogy: What is the focus of the preschool’s curriculum, and does it align with your educational beliefs? It is important to enroll your child in a preschool that offers a pedagogy rooted in early childhood research to support your offspring’s well-being and holistic development. It is good to raise academically well-versed children, but a confident, inquisitive, independent, and humane adult can go a long way.
  • Teachers: Are the educators qualified and experienced? Are they passionate about childcare? It is advisable to ensure that children are surrounded by warm-hearted and committed teachers and caregivers. These adults are the ones who will be able to encourage a safe environment, support exploration, and invite good interaction.
  • Location and Facilities: Is the preschool located in a safe and convenient location for you? It is good to enroll your child in a preschool that is designed to encourage play, exploration, and discovery. Outdoor play areas, safe and spacious classrooms, and stimulating high-quality play equipment are all part of a great childhood experience for your toddler.

In addition to these, you may also want to consider the following:

  • Finances: How much is the preschool fee? Is it affordable for your family?
  • School’s philosophy: What is the school’s philosophy on early childhood education? Do they belief that every child is valuable and deserves to have the opportunity to recognize their intrinsic value and thrive?
  • Activities and programs: What types of activities and programs does the school offer? Does it emphasize the need for children to interact with others to thrive, learn and develop?

Once you have considered all of these, you can start visiting preschools. It is important to visit as many preschools as possible before making that final call. This will give you a chance to see the schools in action and meet the teachers and staff.

When you visit a preschool, do pay attention to the following:

  • Overall atmosphere, cleanliness, and safety of the facility
  • Interactions between the teachers and children
  • Activities that are being offered

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask the faculty or staff. They should be happy to answer your questions and help you make the best decision for your little one.

Getting your Toddler Excited About Preschool

Once you have chosen a preschool, it is important to start preparing your toddler for the transition. With a little preparation, your toddler can have a positive and successful experience in preschool.

Here are a few things you can do:

  • Talk to your little one about preschool and how fun it would be
  • Read books on toddlers enjoying preschool and help them develop a love of learning
  • Visit the preschool along with your child so they can get familiar with the environment
  • Encourage your toddler to be independent and help them develop self-care skills

It is also important to be patient and understanding during the transition. It may take some time for your child to adjust to their new school. Be there to support them and help them through their fears and concerns. By following these tips, you can positively aid your toddler to be ready for the challenges and excitement of preschool.

Top 10 tips to prepare your toddler for preschool

by Dibber September 13, 2023
written by Dibber
It’s not easy to send your little one off to school for the first time, especially when they’re just two or three years old. But giving your child a high-quality early childhood education and care will set them up for greater success in all areas of their life. Written by Supplied

Why preschool is important for your toddler?

If you think about it, most of life’s big issues begin to challenge us during our preschool days; from how to make new friends and building new skills, to understanding how to get our needs met and articulate and communicate our concerns, the list is endless.

Starting preschool is a big milestone for both toddlers and you as parents or caregivers. It can be an exciting time for toddlers to begin structured learning and socialising with other children their age, but it can also be a bit unnerving because of the fear of the unknown.

How to prepare your toddler for preschool?

  • Talk to your toddler enthusiastically about preschool
One of the best ways to prepare your toddler for school is by talking to them about it. Explain what a preschool is, why it is important, and what to expect. Let them know that they will be learning new skills, making friends, and having a lot of fun. You can even speak to them about fond memories from your preschool days to encourage them.
  • Visit the preschool along with your child
It is always advisable to take your child with you while you visit the preschool. This will give them a chance to see the classroom, meet their prospective teachers, and get familiar with the facility and the environment.
  • Start potty training
If your little one is not already potty trained, it is a good idea to start this before they start preschool. Though schools are always prepared to handle any unforeseen situations, toilet-training your toddler will help avoid accidents and make their transition to preschool hassle-free.
  • Establish a fun bedtime routine
A bedtime routine can be your time together. Catch up, talk, and listen to them. This practice is sure to help them get better sleep, feel safe, and wake up feeling refreshed. According to studies, this ritual will also improve both their learning and behaviour.
  • Encourage independence and self-care
The more independent your little one is, the easier their transition to preschool is going to be. Encourage them to do things on their own, starting with daily chores such as dressing up, eating their meals (start with finger foods for ease), wearing their socks and shoes right, and using the potty.
  • Read to your toddler
Reading to your child is a great way to prepare them for preschool. It will help them develop their language skills and vocabulary, nurture their love for reading, and learn about the world around them through stories. This can be part of the bedtime routine.
  • Play educational games
Playing games is always a fun way to help children learn. There are many different types of educational games available, both indoor and outdoor, so you can find ones that are appropriate for your toddler’s age and interests.
  • Teach your child basic social skills
Preschool is a great time for toddlers to learn basic social skills, such as sharing, active listening and being kind to others. You can teach them these at home by playing games and practicing them together.
  • Be positive and supportive
Let your toddler know that you are excited for them to start preschool. Be supportive and let them know that you are there for them if they need help or have questions.
  • Help your child learn to say a warm goodbye
Good communication between parents and children is crucial. Being greeted with warmness can help self-esteem from an early age. It is also vital to the growth, development, and learning of the child. This approach strengthens the child’s experience of feeling valuable and being seen.

Starting preschool is a huge step but by following these tips, you can help your toddler prepare for preschool and make the transition as smooth as possible for both of you.
