Because raising tiny humans is hard work but with the right team (that’s us!), it gets a whole lot easier.

The cheer of Christmas is finally here. My daughters and I were hard at work recently. Setting up the Christmas tree is no light task and we each take it seriously because a great Christmas tree invites great Christmas presents from Santa. First, we added the golden Christmas baubles, then the cute red bows, followed by the champagne pinecorns. To add a pop in colour, we wound several coloured tinsels, which were used as fancy scarves at some point during that evening. The final touch was the silver star added to the top and switching on the fairy lights that adorned the tree. What a delightful sight it was once they were on. But wait….what about the presents?

Fear not! Here are some light-hearted yet practical tips to help you manage your money wisely during this joyful time of year, ensuring you can enjoy the festivities without the financial hangover in “Januworry”.

  1. Set a Festive Season Budget

First things first: it’s crucial to make a budget. Sit down with your partner or family and outline all the categories you’ll be spending on – gifts, decorations, food and gatherings. Once you have a clear picture, allocate specific amounts for each category. Use a festive-themed notebook or a colourful app to track this budget. Remember, it’s not about stifling the fun but rather making sure you can enjoy the season without regretting it later! You can invite family and friends to bring and share to ensure you include everyone in the festivities, but it will also be friendlier on the pocket.

  1. Have a “Fun Fund”

One of the things that makes Christmas phenomenal is the opportunity to shop and find some real quality gems. Before you walk into a store, establish a “fun fund” and limit your spending. This way, you can splurge a little without feeling guilty. You may find that having a small amount set aside makes the actual shopping more enjoyable, as you’re not constantly worried about going overboard!

  1. Get Creative with Gifts

Why not embrace your creative side? Handmade gifts can be more meaningful and often cost less. Consider baking cookies, crafting personalised photo albums, or preparing handmade Christmas cards for friends and family. Not only does it show you care, but it also saves money and adds a unique touch to your presents. Plus, think about the stories you’ll share when you gift something that comes straight from the heart!

4. Take Advantage of Sales and Discounts

With Black Friday leading into the holiday season, there are endless opportunities for sales. Make a list of the gifts you want to purchase and keep an eye out for discounts. Sign up for newsletters from your favourite stores to be the first to know about any sales or coupon codes. It’s a great way to snag a deal, and you can feel good about saving some bucks!

  1. Embrace the Joy of Experiences

Instead of material gifts, consider giving experiences, and also seeking experiences to participate in that are cost-effective. Visiting Christmas wonderlands with streetlight decorations and festive activities can be a great hit. You can also consider buying loved ones tickets to a concert, a family outing, or even a gift certificate for a fun class can create lasting memories without cluttering anyone’s home with more stuff. Plus, experiences are often more cherished than things, as spending quality time with loved ones can make them an excellent choice for thoughtful gifts.

  1. Don’t Forget About Donations and Charity

Lastly, consider setting aside a little for donations or charitable giving. The spirit of the season is not only about celebration but also about generosity. It can be as simple as rounding up your spending for groceries and donating the extra to a local charity, a registered non-profit organisation, or a public benefit organisation. Donations to qualifying organisations can be deducted from taxable income up to a maximum of 10%. This can provide a lovely unexpected rebate during tax season. Of your annual income, save a bit for unexpected festive expenses.

The festive season should be a time of joy, laughter, and connection. As much as we all love the twinkling lights, the gatherings with family and friends, and of course, the delicious treats, it’s easy to lose track of our finances amid all the excitement.
