How to Apply for SASSA Grants

Applying for a SASSA grant involves a few key steps:

  • Eligibility Check: Confirm you meet the requirements for the specific grant (see SASSA eligibility criteria).
  • Visit a SASSA Office: Applications must be submitted in person at your nearest office.
  • Documents Required: Bring a valid South African ID, proof of residence, proof of income (if applicable) and supporting medical or court documents, depending on the grant type.
  • Application Form: Complete the official SASSA registration.
  • Biometric Verification: As of 1 September 2025, new applicants undergo biometric fingerprint enrolment or facial recognition to reduce fraud.
  • Approval & Payment: Once processed, successful applicants will be notified and payments will be made through bank accounts, pay points, or retailers.

Security and Access

Payments will be made through the usual channels: bank accounts, approved pay points and retailers. Beneficiaries are urged to ensure their personal details are up to date to avoid disruptions. The agency has also introduced biometric verification for new applicants, strengthening security and reducing fraud risks.

As the month approaches, beneficiaries are encouraged to clearly mark the SASSA dates, plan withdrawals responsibly and lean on the agency’s communication channels for updates.
