Over 650 000 votes were cast in BabyYumYum.co.za’s Product of the Year Awards 2022, and the result is a comprehensive list of the baby, child and parenting products South Africans rate above the rest

“When we launched the BabyYumYum.co.za Product of the Year Awards in 2019, we wanted to acknowledge and recognise the incredible brands that make the lives of parents easier,” explains founder and Chief Mommy Amanda Rogaly. “Now in its fourth year, we’ve achieved exactly that, with our winners list becoming a trusted buying guide for both new and more ‘experienced’ parents who trust and value the BYY community’s endorsement stamp of approval.” 

Shopping for baby products can be overwhelming and confusing because there’s simply so much choice available on the South African market – a streamlined list that’s compiled by a reputable parenting community  saves parents valuable time and money when purchasing across 67 categories spanning from Best Nappy to Best Pain & Fever Buster for Kids, Best Family Car and Best Child-Friendly Restaurant.

What sets the BabyYumYum.co.za Product of the Year Awards apart from other awards is that each of the brands that made the shortlist were nominated by members of our loyal parenting community and it was up to this same trusted group of parents to vote and decide on the winners, ensuring that every winner who lands a covetable spot on the list is truly a market leader in their category, as voted by those who buy and use their products.

Insights into consumer behaviour

In an economically uncertain world, it’s inevitable that spending habits will be impacted and the BYY Product of the Year Awards highlighted some notable trends in consumer behaviour that have already been seen on a global level.

While the majority of people are, undeniably, tightening their purse strings, that doesn’t mean that consumers in general – and parents in particular – aren’t willing to spend where it counts.

In fact, according to a study carried out by market research company GWI, quality is the top purchase driver, and that was evident in the results of the Product of the Year Awards for 2022. Iconic, high-quality brands like Purity, Epi Max and Tommee Tippee scooped up awards across multiple categories, cementing their status as tried-and-tested ‘must-haves’ for parents.

In the past we have seen well-known brands dominating certain categories, but this year has seen  a shift to alternative brands offering new experiences and innovation with previous leaders falling off the podium.

A further indication of changing budgets was evident in the value-for-money products and brands that came out on top in their categories, including Clicks Made 4 Mom winning Best Breastfeeding Pads and Ackermans being awarded both Best Kids Clothing Store and Best Maternity Wear.

Other victories include notable brands like SupaQuick, PregOmega Plus and  Teejel, making their way onto the winner’s list as yet another acknowledgement for the ways they make the everyday lives of parents easier.
