Car seats save lives. According to global studies, the risk of death for infants involved in car accidents is reduced by 70% if they are safely seated in a correctly-installed car seat, and for children aged between one and four, that figure stands between 47% and 54%.
Fisher-Price, one of the world’s leading baby and toddler brands, is proud to announce the relaunch of its top-selling infant and toddler car seats in South Africa, exclusively through Babies R Us.
The range includes five car seats; three versions of the popular Fisher-Price BeOne infant seat, which are rear-facing and suitable from birth to 13kg, the Fisher-Price Cosmos Convertible seat that can be used as both a rear-facing and front-facing seat and is suitable from birth to 18kg, and the Fisher-Price Dream Booster seat, accredited for use in children from 13 to 36kg.
All five seats are ECE R44/04 accredited, which means that they comply with the latest safety requirements as set out in the European safety standard ECE R44. The infant seats all use a five-point harness system that has been proven to keep infants and children in the safe shell of the seat, in the case of an accident. They also all have removable, washable covers, for those other, unforeseen accidents of childhood.

“In South Africa, it is illegal to travel with a child under the age of three not strapped into an appropriate child seat,” says Blue Horizon Licensing’s CEO, Michelle Reid.
Despite this, according to the Automobile Association, 93% of children under the age of 12 in private cars in South Africa are not in appropriate car seats. Unsurprisingly, according to Stats SA, car accidents are the leading cause of non-natural deaths in children under the age of 14.
“Car accidents happen. And they happen more regularly in South Africa than almost any other country in the world. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their children use a child seat, or booster seat, to ensure their safety in the unfortunate case of an accident,” says Reid.
It has been proven time and again, that traditional seatbelts, created for use by adults, are not sufficient to protect infants or children. They require special systems that accommodate their size and weight at different stages of development.
According to Arrive Alive: “Appropriate child restraint systems are specifically designed to protect infants and young children from injury during a collision or a sudden stop by restraining their movement away from the vehicle structure and distributing the forces of a crash over the strongest parts of the body, with minimum damage to the soft tissues. Child restraints are also effective in reducing injuries that can occur during non-crash events, such as a sudden stop, a swerving evasive manoeuvre or a door opening during vehicle movement.”
“The safest place for children aged 12 years and under is in the back seat, properly restrained in an approved child safety seat.”
Fisher-Price car seats have been trusted by generations of parents, and Blue Horizon Licensing is delighted that they will once again be available in South Africa.
The car seats will be available for purchase exclusively in Babies R Us stores across the country, as well as online, via Babiesrus.co.za.
To mark the occasion, and to ensure even more peace of mind (and peace and quiet!) for new parents, Babies R Us is holding a special promotion, giving away a free 2-pack Fisher-Price soother set, with every purchase of a Fisher-Price infant or booster seat.
