Singer Danny K Raises Awareness About Colorectal Cancer After Wife’s Passing

Lisa, 41, was the daughter of prominent attorney Billy Gundelfinger. She first made her mark in the entertainment industry as a model, before carving out a respected career in law, and later fell in love with Danny. The couple married in Somerset West in 2012 and spent 14 years together, raising three children.

Danny K Reveals Details Of Lisa’s Cancer Battle

As tributes and messages of support continue to pour in, Danny K has joined many in paying tribute to his wife. Taking to his official Instagram account on Tuesday 11 August, the musician poured his heart out. He shared that Lisa was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November 2023 and, for nearly three years, she faced the illness with quiet courage, choosing to keep her struggle away from the public eye.

“From that moment, she fought with extraordinary strength and determination. Together with our family, we searched for hope in South Africa and around the world, pursuing every treatment and every opportunity available to us. Tragically, despite everything, we could not save her,” he wrote.

Danny K opened up about Lisa’s quiet strength and her decision to shield their family from the weight of her illness. 

“Lisa chose to keep her illness private. She never wanted pity, attention or sympathy. Above all, she wanted to protect our children and preserve their happiness and innocence for as long as possible. Even through the hardest moments, she remained gentle, humble and remarkably brave, inspiring everyone who walked this journey beside her. We are deeply grateful to every doctor, nurse and healthcare professional who cared for Lisa throughout her journey, both in South Africa and abroad,” he added.

Lisa’s Gentle Strength

He described how, even in the darkest hours, Lisa remained “gentle, humble and remarkably brave, inspiring everyone who walked this journey beside her.” 

Danny shared that the decision to share Lisa’s diagnosis now comes with purpose: awareness. “Colorectal cancer screening was traditionally recommended from age 50, but the disease is increasingly affecting younger people. Today, international guidelines recommend routine screening from age 45 for people at average risk. Persistent symptoms should always be discussed with a doctor and properly investigated.”

The musician added that Lisa would have loved to raise awareness and help others through her journey and although she never had that chance, her family is determined to carry that mission forward in her name.

What Is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer, is one of the three most common cancers affecting both men and women in South Africa. Worryingly, more younger individuals are being diagnosed. Data from the National Cancer Registry 2024 shows it is the fourth most common cancer in men, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 88 and the fifth most common in women, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 136.

In its early stages, colorectal cancer usually develops without noticeable symptoms. As a result, many cases are only detected once the disease has advanced or spread to other parts of the body. This highlights the importance of knowing your family history and making use of screening options before any signs appear, rather than waiting until discomfort sets in.

Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer

According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), when symptoms do occur, they may include changes in bowel habits (such as diarrhoea, constipation, or altered stool consistency), rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, ongoing abdominal discomfort (cramps, gas, or pain unrelated to diet), a sensation of incomplete bowel emptying, persistent fatigue or weakness and unexplained weight loss. Recognising these warning signs and prioritising early screening can make a significant difference in outcomes.
