The idea of travelling with a newborn can be both exciting and terrifying for new parents. Between nappies, feeds, outfit changes and trying to avoid public meltdowns, leaving the house starts feeling like a military operation. I’ve just come back from travelling with my newborn for two weeks and honestly, I learned very quickly that travelling with a baby is a completely different experience from travelling before having kids.
Part of the trip was for work, part of it was a family visit to see my parents in the Cape and somewhere between airports, road trips, hotel stays, feeding schedules and nappy changes, I discovered a few baby items I genuinely could not have survived without.
If you’re planning your first trip with a newborn anytime soon, these are the things that truly helped me along the way. Some of them were lifesavers, some surprised me and some I wish I had packed even more of.
A Portable Nebuliser Absolutely Saved Us
I never expected my baby to get sick while we were travelling, especially at only six weeks old, but unfortunately, he picked up a bug from my nephew during the trip. One item completely changed the experience for us: a portable nebuliser.
A mom friend with twins had gifted one to me and I honestly didn’t realise how useful it would become until we actually needed it. Being able to use it easily while travelling made such a massive difference. If there is one medical baby item I would genuinely recommend to parents travelling with a newborn, it would probably be this. Especially during winter in South Africa, I would not travel without one again.
Cooler Bags Are Non-Negotiable
If you are breastfeeding, expressing or travelling with milk, a proper cooler bag becomes essential very quickly. We flew and also did a long road trip, so we were constantly moving around. Having a cooler bag made everything easier, especially when storing expressed milk during travel days or long stretches in the car. It is one of those items you may not think much about before travelling, but once you are on the road with a hungry baby, you suddenly realise how important it really is.
The Baby Carrier Made Flying So Much Easier
Before the flight, I was nervous about how everything would go, but surprisingly, my baby was fantastic on the plane. The biggest reason was the baby carrier.
He slept in the carrier for most of the flight and it made moving through the airport so much easier for me. Trying to carry bags, documents and a newborn at the same time can become chaotic very quickly, so having him secure and comfortable against me made a huge difference. If you are flying with a newborn, I honestly think a good baby carrier is worth every cent.
Pack More Burp Cloths Than You Think You Need
No one warned me how many burp cloths I would go through while travelling. Honestly, it was ridiculous. I packed quite a few and still found myself wishing I had brought more. Between spit-ups, feeding, dribbles and random messes, they disappear incredibly quickly. If you are staying in hotels or places where daily washing is not easy, I highly recommend packing an excessive amount of burp cloths, bibs and muslins. You will absolutely use them.
Ready-to-Feed Formula Is Amazing for Emergencies
One thing that turned out to be incredibly useful was the pre-made, ready-to-feed formula bottles. You can literally open them, pour them into a bottle and feed your baby immediately at room temperature.
There were moments during the road trip where stopping immediately just was not possible, and having these available made stressful situations so much easier. Even if you are breastfeeding, I think having emergency feeding options while travelling can really help take some pressure off.

Portable Breast Pumps Were a Huge Help
I also used portable breast pumps while we were driving. Being able to pump milk in the car, pour it directly into a bottle and feed him during the journey without stopping was honestly a game changer for us. Long road trips with babies can feel daunting, especially when feeding schedules do not line up with travel plans, so this helped us massively.
Noise-Cancelling Baby Headphones Worked Brilliantly
Because some parts of the trip involved work events and noisy environments, we packed baby noise-protection headphones. I was genuinely impressed by how well they worked. He slept through loud environments so peacefully while wearing them. If you are attending weddings, sporting events, conferences, or busy family functions with a newborn, these are definitely worth considering.
White Noise Helps Anywhere
White noise remains one of my favourite baby sleep tools no matter where we are. Travelling completely changes a baby’s environment and routine, so having something familiar to help with sleep can really help. Whether we were in a hotel, visiting family or stopping somewhere new, white noise helped create consistency for naps and bedtime.
Always Pack Basic Medical Supplies
I made the mistake of assuming I would not really need medical supplies for my newborn while travelling. Wrong. We ended up needing things I had not originally packed, including congestion support items and extra health essentials. Now I would never travel without:
• Saline nose spray
• A thermometer
• Saline solution for the nebuliser
• Sun cream
• Dummy sterilising equipment
• Nasal congestion support products
Even if you never use them, having them with you gives enormous peace of mind.

Linen Savers Are the Ultimate Hidden Parenting Hack
For those truly chaotic emergency nappy situations, linen savers were one of the best things we packed. Yes, we had changing mats, but when things went completely sideways during car changes or while travelling, linen savers made cleanup so much easier. They barely take up space in your bag and can save your car seat, hotel bedding or changing station from disaster.
Newborn Travel Is More Possible Than You Think
Before the trip, I worried about everything. I wondered if he would cry constantly, if we would sleep, if the flights would be awful or if the road trip would completely exhaust us. Surprisingly, it went far better than expected.
At six weeks old, he mostly slept, adapted really well and travelled beautifully. Of course, there were messy moments, lots of washing and a few stressful situations, but overall it reminded me that babies are often far more adaptable than we think.
We are a family that travels a lot for work and life in general, so this definitely felt like the first of many adventures together. I already know that as my son gets older, the packing list and travel tricks will probably completely change again. For now, though, these were the newborn travel essentials that genuinely helped me survive our first big trip together.
