More and more people are turning to AI chatbots for support, companionship or even mental health advice but the consequences are not always benign. Experts are now sounding alarms about a phenomenon sometimes called “AI psychosis,” in which vulnerable users begin to develop distorted thinking, delusional beliefs or overdependence on the bot. Because chatbots can mirror, validate or expand the user’s ideas, they may unintentionally reinforce negative or extreme thoughts. While still in the early stages of study, mental health professionals warn that prolonged AI interaction could worsen symptoms in susceptible individuals.
