Life with two young children can be demanding and, at times, overwhelming, yet atress Simphiwe “Simz” Ngema embraces the journey wholeheartedly and remains deeply grateful for her strong support system.
The proud mother of Tiyani and baby Kaboentle Tinotenda Chinyani, whom she shares with her partner Tino Chinyani, gracefully balances daily routines, professional commitments and family life, discovering both challenges and deeply rewarding moments along the way.
Having recently welcomed Kaboentle, Simphiwe is enjoying this new chapter of raising two children. Amidst the inevitable chaos, she treasures the simple joys: watching her newborn sleep peacefully, seeing Tiyani grow into his role as a loving older brother and cherishing meaningful moments with her family.
The former Muvhango actress spoke to Goodwill Thomo about her transition from being a mother of one to two, and how she continues to navigate the demands of a busy, full life.
How has life changed since welcoming your second child?
Life has changed drastically. Having two kids feels like I have ten. There is so much to remember, and it can get overwhelming at times, but I’m grateful for all the support I have.
What’s been the biggest adjustment going from one child to two?
Preparation time is longer. We take more time to get ready for anything, but we also have so many cute, beautiful moments.
How is your older son adapting to being a big brother now?
Tiyani has settled well into his deputy parent role. He is obsessed with his baby brother and acts like he’s the third parent.
What’s your favourite part of the newborn phase?
I love that they sleep a lot, and my babies are easy. Watching them sleep and just falling in love with them is my favourite part.
How do you balance your career and parenting?
There is no perfect balance. You have to learn to prioritise and accept that there will be days when not everything gets done. Focus on what’s important each day.
What’s a typical day like for you now?
I wake up at 06:00 because the baby is awake, attend to him until 08:00, then Tino takes over while I catch up on some sleep. I wake at 11:00, prepare for meetings or shoots, drop the baby at my mum’s house, go to work, pick up the kids, come back home, cook, then prepare for bed.
Has your approach to parenting changed with your second child?
Not at all. Yes, kids are different, but the fundamentals remain the same.
How do you make time for yourself with two little ones?
As soon as they go to bed, I have some me-time: catch up on social media, take a long bath, have hot chocolate, work out, spend time with my partner, or just watch my favourite shows.
What are you most excited to experience with two children?
I’m excited to see them grow and teach them how to be good citizens of the world. I want to see them become kind, successful individuals and build an unbreakable bond with me, their dad, and with each other.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give new parents?
Take care of yourself and include yourself every day. Pour into your own cup, too. You can’t take care of everyone else if you are not well.
