There is just something so irresistibly fun about playdough, says Marcia Sissing of blog Mini Matisse Diaries, and mom of three. “To be honest,” she says, “I find the moulding and shaping quite therapeutic. My kids love play dough and it often keeps them entertained for a long time. There are so many benefits to playing with play dough such as the development of fine motor, hand-eye co-ordination and pre-writing skills, as well as encouraging imagination and creativity. The emphasis, however, is always on FUN!”

We used to play with playdough in the same way – moulding and shaping with hands, or using cookie cutters, or adding bits and pieces like pipe cleaners or wiggly eyes to make things more exciting. Recently though I stumbled across playdough mats on Pinterest, and my kids have loved this new addition.

It’s funny how sometimes something so simple can just add a whole new dimension to play. I decided to give them a blank egg mat template mat on paper so they can use their imagination and creativity to decorate it with the playdough. The possibilities are endless with these mats.

You will need:

  • Playdough (you can choose if you want one colour or a variety). Make your own or opt for ready-made Play-Doh if you have access to it.
  • Egg template (see link below to download one or draw an outline on an A4 piece of paper)
  • Laminating pouches (our laminator wasn’t working so we just put the egg template into the pouch without laminating and it worked just as well).
  • If you don’t have laminating pouches, put the template in a plastic sleeve or cover the template with cling film. You just want to cover the template with something so that the playdough doesn’t stick to the paper.

How to create:

  • Place the egg template (download: egg-template-design) into the laminating pouch and laminate if you have one available.
  • Alternatively, if not then place in a plastic sleeve or cover the egg with cling film.
  • That’s it! The playdough mat is ready for decorating.
  • Encourage them to cover the egg with playdough in decorations of their choice. Have them imagine the playdough to be like a marker or crayon and they use it to decorate the eggs by sticking rather than colouring.
  • Add another dimension to this activity by drawing patterns on the egg template before covering it, and then giving it to them to decorate.
  • There is no right or wrong way to do this – simply enjoy and have FUN!
